Growth arrest lines in adult

Case contributed by Dr Aneta Kecler-Pietrzyk

Post trauma to tibia. Query acute fracture.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male

Mild soft tissue swelling in the area of trauma pointed by patient (marked with pen).

No evidence of acute fracture.

Linear sclerosis seen within tibia in keeping with old growth arrest lines.

Case Discussion

Growth arrest lines (Harris lines) - are linear sclerotic foci within metaphyses (especially lower limb long bones).

They may be signs of malnutrition and other causes of disrupted osseous development, however in most cases are normal variants without underlying developmental pathology.
