H-shaped vertebrae in patient with sickle cell anemia

A known patient with sickle cell anaemia.

Patient Data

Gender: Male

Chest and abdominal radiographic images show H-shaped vertebral bodies in a patient with sickle cell disease.

Multiple gallbladder stones and enlarged liver in its cranio-caudal dimension.   

Case Discussion

H-shaped vertebrae is seen in many patient with sickle cell anemia. It is likely related to micro-vascular occlusion by sickled RBCs " vaso-occlusive disease" resulting in vertebral end plate infarction.
