Haemophilic arthropathy - knee

Case contributed by Dr Salman S. Albakheet

Known case of hemophilia B with chronic right knee arthritis.

Patient Data

Age: 9 years
Gender: Male

There is squaring of the distal epiphysis of right femur as well as proximal epiphysis of the right tibia associated with widening of the intercondylar notch and synovial thickening.

There is diffuse synovial thickening with characteristic dark signal intensity on pulse sequences denoting hemosiderin deposition. Denudation of the articular cartilage is identified in particular at the lateral femoral condyle with associated subchondral bony erosion/cyst with hemosideric content. Enlargemnt of the distal femoral condyles with widening of the intercondylar notch as well as irregularity of the articular surfaces. Small joint effusion is noted within the suprapatellar pouch.

Case Discussion

Findings are consistent with haemophilic arthropathy with siderotic synovitis.
