Haemorrhagic Baker's cyst

Case contributed by Dr Mitusha Verma

Presentation

Pain and swelling in the region of right knee and calf.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Female
Ultrasound

There is evidence of a well defined hypo echoic cystic area in the right popliteal fossa extending into the upper calf lying superficial to the medial head of gastronemius. It shows presence of septa within along with organised echogenic material suggestive of old hemorrhage with retracted clot.A calcified loose body is seen within one of the loculi. The lesion does not show presence of any vascularity within.

Findings are suggestive of right sided Baker's cyst with ahemorrhage.

Mild joint effusion with minimal synovitis also evident.
