Hemorrhagic ovarian cyst

Presentation

Allergic reaction after dinner. No abdominal complaints.

Patient Data

Age: 16 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

The left ovary presents a cystic mass with hyperechoic lace-like content. Approximate size 51x39 mm. There is no vascular signal on the Doppler scan.  No calcifications or papillary projections inside the cyst.

Normal right ovary.

Normal-sized uterus.

Case Discussion

Typical ultrasound findings of hemorrhagic ovarian cysts:

  • lace-like reticular echoes
  • thin wall
  • no vascularity inside the cyst on Doppler scan
  • posterior acoustic enhancement

Some hemorrhagic ovarian cysts can be symptomatic; this patient had no abdominal complaints.
