Two-part medial sesamoid bone with irregular opposing surfaces of both bone fragments, consistent with sesamoid fracture.
Normal shape of the lateral sesamoid bone.
Hallux valgus is also noted.
Case Discussion
Sesamoid fracture is important to be differentiated from bipartite sesamoid bone. Fracture surfaces are irregular and can fit together, unlike bipartite sesamoid which appears well-corticated structure with smooth borders. The hallucal sesamoids are more susceptible to trauma and fracture, with the medial sesamoid fractured more frequently encountered of the foot sesamoid bones 1.
