Hamartoma of the breast

Case contributed by Clayton Carter

New palpable non-tender breast mass noticed by the patient.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Female

Mammography of the left breast reveals a mass containing fat and soft-tissue density within a thin capsule in the upper outer quadrant of the left breast.

Ultrasound of the mass reveals a heterogenous lesion of mixed density contained within a thin capsule.

Case Discussion

Mammography displays characteristic findings on hamartoma, and results were confirmed via ultrasound. The diagnosis was made based on radiographic features of mixed tissue types contained within a single capsule. Hamartomas are an uncommon yet benign cause of breast mass.
