Presentation

Dyspnea and hemoptysis.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years.
Gender: Female
x-ray

Wedge-shaped peripheral consolidation right lower lobe, small right pleural effusion,otherwise normal.

Bilateral pulmonary emboli with most severe involvement of the lower lobes. Peripheral consolidation right lower with decreased perfusion of the anterior area of consolidation indicating pulmonary infarction. Small right pleural effusion, left lower lobe consolidation left posterior costophrenic angle may represent a combination of hemorrhage, infarction and atelectasis. No right heart strain.

Case Discussion

Hampton hump is an uncommon plain radiographic finding in patients with pulmonary embolism and pulmonary infarction. When present, it is typically wedge-shaped and pleural based.
