Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male

Abnormal soft tissue swelling and edema seen in right hand, resulting in a cobblestone appearance. It is showing abnormal peripheral vascularity on color Doppler. There is also an abnormal collection noted in right mid and terminal metacarpals in subcutaneous soft tissues which measures 3.7 x 1.2 cm. Findings are suggestive of cellulitis with abscess formation.

Zoomed image of abscess on clinical examination (sorry for a poor resolution photo).

Case Discussion

If the infection spreads to deeper tissues, complications can occur, such as soft tissue abscessinfectious myositisnecrotizing fasciitis, or osteomyelitis. Occasionally sepsis may result. Special consideration should be given to geriatric patients, in whom cellulitis of the lower extremities is more likely to develop into thrombophlebitis
