Hepatic hydatid cyst

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Dull right upper quadrant pain for 2 years. Ultrasound exam performed 1 year ago reported hepatic cystic lesion and then started antihelmintic therapy for hydatid cyst.

Patient Data

Age: 15 years
Gender: Female

Abdomen

A relatively heterogeneous hypo to isoechoic lesion in segment VII of the liver. The lesion has echogenic walls.

There is a well-defined thick-walled cystic mass lesion with mural calcification and internal crumpled membranes in segment VII.

Case Discussion

Hydatid cysts at later stages (inactive/degenerative) may not have really anechoic appearance on ultrasonography and can be challenging. MRI can be helpful in such cases when available.
