Hepatic hydatid cysts - pediatric

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Right upper quadrant pain.

Patient Data

Age: 7 years
Gender: Male

There are two large unilocular cysts of the liver, located in the segments VII/VI (8.5 x 7 x 6.5 cm), and segments VIII/I (7 x 6.5 x 5.9 cm) of homogeneous content and high attenuation wall on non-enhanced CT with foci of calcification of that located in the segments VII/VI. No detached membres are seen. No peripheral enhancement on postcontrast sequences. A subtle dilatation of the intrahepatic biliary ducts is noted ( compressed by the cyst located in the segments VIII/I) as well as compression of the portal vein and IVC.

The chest radiograph (not shown) was normal.

Case Discussion

CT features are most consistent with hepatic hydatid cysts stage CE1 according to 2001 WHO classification of hepatic hydatid cysts (or stage I according to Gharbi classification).

The serological tests were positive in this case.
