Hepatisation of the gall bladder

Case contributed by Shailaja Muniraj

Presentation

Vague upper abdominal pain.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

The gallbladder is well distended and is completely filled with amorphous echogenic sludge. Additionally, multiple calculi are noted in the range of 2-4 mm. The gallbladder wall is of normal thickness. CBD is of normal caliber.

Case Discussion

Hepatisation of the gallbladder is observed on ultrasound when sludge fills up the distended gallbladder lumen. Since it is similar to the hepatic echotexture, it is known as hepatisation.
