Flank pain and microscopic hematuria. On reviewing old notes - thalassemia patient.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male

The inferior aspects of both the liver and spleen are well illustrated and lie at the level of the iliac crest.

The spleen in particular is enlarged, with a paucity of gas in the left upper quadrant.

Case Discussion

Although not performed for the purpose of assessing the solid organs of the upper abdomen, organomegaly may be apparent on plain radiographs as in this case.

The outline of the organ may be identified or the displacement of bowel gas.
