Hiatus hernia (chest x-ray)

Presentation

Cough.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female
X-ray

Lungs and pleural spaces are clear. Cardiomediastinal contour is normal. Retrocardiac opacity in the midline, demonstrated to be a hiatus hernia on subsequent CT.

CT confirms a large hiatus hernia. 

Case Discussion

Differential diagnosis for this chest x-ray appearance includes:

  • paraspinal opacity from hematoma or infection
  • posterior mediastinal mass, e.g. oesopahgeal tumor
