Hip arthrogram injection (fluoroscopic guided)

Case contributed by Dai Roberts
Diagnosis not applicable

Presentation

Presented for image-guided diagnostic/therapeutic steroid injection into the hip.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Female

Injection of contrast

Fluoroscopy

Injection of iodinated contrast extends into the hip joint confirming an intra-articular position.

Administration of injectate

Fluoroscopy

Injectate, containing a corticosteroid and local anaesthetic, has been instilled into the hip joint.

Case Discussion

Shown is a technically successful anaesthetic hip arthrogram injection.

The syringe selection will help identify the different solutions for injecting. Anaesthetic arthrograms are different from other arthrogram injections, as the commonly used corticosteroids are white in colour, so identifying the steroid containing syringe is obvious. Keeping the local anaesthetic syringe, and contrast syringe for fluoroscopy, the same for both diagnostic and anaesthetic arthrograms is good practice to limit confusion when switching between the procedures on the same list.
