Hip landmarks - an approach

Landmarks of a normal hip or pelvis radiograph:

  • Red - iliopectineal line
  • Light blue - ilioischial line
  • Yellow - teardrop
  • Dark blue - roof of acetabulum
  • Green - edge of the anterior acetabular wall
  • Pink - edge of the posterior acetabular wall
  • Orange - Shenton line

Case Discussion

Radiographic landmarks of the hip are useful in the assessment of pelvic, acetabular, and proximal femur fractures. Disruption of these lines may occur if there is an underlying fracture, sometimes occult.
