Hip resurfacing arthroplasty

Presentation

Blunt trauma, the patient fell off the bed and injured her left hip. There is known previous surgical intervention.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Intact bony pelvis in a setting of blunt trauma. There is a left hip resurfacing arthroplasty. There is an asymmetric left acetabular and intertrochanteric osteopenia however no other complications of the resurfacing arthroplasty are present. There is age-appropriate degenerative change within the sacroiliac and right hip joints. Metallic sterilization clips are present.

Case Discussion

X-rays confirm a unilateral left hip resurfacing arthroplasty. There is no abnormal periprosthetic lucency to suggest loosening or periprosthetic sepsis, no subsidence, no implant fracture or fragmentation in view of blunt trauma, and no post-surgical iliopsoas calcific tendinosis. The patient is afebrile and there are no indirect plain film features to suggest possible particle disease.
