Hirschsprung disease

Case contributed by Dr Hidayatullah Hamidi

Presentation

The child complains from long standing constipation since early childhood.

Patient Data

Age: 8 years
Gender: Male
Barium

Small calibre of the distal rectum with proximal dilatation. Fasciculation of the aganglionic segment is seen.

CT

Significantly dilated colons with collapsed rectum. The transitional zone can be appreciated in all axial, coronal and sagittal planes. The rectosigmoid ratio is completely obliterated.

Case Discussion

Commonly a short segment of aganglionic distal colon/rectum is responsible for the disease. A late presentation like this case can result in significant proximal dilatation.
