Horseshoe kidney

Pain in right lumbar region

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male

Lower poles of both kidneys are fused across the midline by an isthmus representing horse shoe kidney.

Calculus is seen in right renal pelvis. Mild hydronephrosis is also seen on right side.

Case Discussion

Horseshoe kidney is the most common type of renal fusion anomaly, occurring in 1:400-500 adults with a male predominance of 2:1. They are susceptible to blunt trauma and have increased risk of developing transitional cell carcinoma.
