Horseshoe kidney

Case contributed by Dr Sajoscha Sorrentino

Presentation

Patient presented with unclear abdominal pain.

Patient Data

Age: 60
Gender: Female
Modality: CT

While no CT morphologic correlate for the patient's abdominal pain was found, you can nicely see her (previously unknown) horseshoe kidney.

Case Discussion

Horseshoe kidneys are, in themselves, asymptomatic and thus they are usually identified incidentally. They are however prone to a number of complications as a result of poor drainage, which may lead to clinical presentation.
