Hounsfield characteristics of Floseal

Case contributed by Miss Sally-Ann Price

Presentation

Patient presented with hemiplegia and decreased level of consciousness. Initial CT showed large basal ganglia bleed. They were taken to theatre for a midi-craniotomy and evacuation of clot.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Modality: CT

Plain CT demonstrates the clot after decompression, with residual intraventricular haemorrhage but no hydrocephalus. Midline shift has substantially improved.

There is low attenuation within the clot: this is Floseal (Baxter), a haemostatic matrix of thrombin coated gelatine beads. Note the Hounsfield density measures -233, intermediate between fat (circa -100) and air (-1000).
