Hydatid liver cyst

Case contributed by Dr Balint Botz

Referred for screening abdominal US due to chronic pelvic pain.

Patient Data

Age: 60
Gender: Female

US demonstrated an inhomogenous circumscribed mass with no internal vascularity, connected to the left lobe of the liver.

Six years earlier CT scan

The findings were correlated to a several years abdominal CT, which confirmed the lesion as a known hydatid cyst in the 3 segment of the liver, here visible as a well-defined round, low-density mass with peripheral calcifications and no contrast enhancement (bilateral small adrenal adenomas are also visible).

Case Discussion

US and CT appearance of a partially calcified long-standing hydatid cyst of the liver that underwent chronic changes, thus it displayed an unusually inhomogenous echogenicity on US, and an almost soft tissue density on CT.
