Hyoid bone fracture

Lateral neck trauma (football tackle), causing severe pain, and dysphonia, no signs of respiratory distress.

Patient Data

Age: 17 years
Gender: Male

Right greater cornu of the hyoid bone with a cortical defect. better seen on a right oblique projection


The CT scan confirms the right cornu fracture, with medial angulation of 90º, respiratory tract not involved.

Case Discussion

Football player, 17 year-old male, with lateral neck trauma, had severe neck pain, but no airway obstruction, only difficulty swallowing, and dysphonia. All of these symptoms confirmed to be from a right greater cornu fracture.

Patient was stable and no surgery was needed, only conservative treatment.
