Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Extensive well-defined sclerosis centered with the roots of the mandibular teeth except the mandibular central and lateral incisors.

The maxilla is edentulous with mild alveolar recession. Multiple crown restorations. No periapical lucency or aggressive focal osseous lesion. Visualized paranasal sinuses are clear. Visualized temporomandibular joints are intact.

Case Discussion

Hypercementosis is the non-neoplastic hyperplastic proliferation of cementum around the dental roots. It may be localized around one tooth, or as in this case, generalized involving many teeth. The typical appearance is a "fat root", i.e. the dental root appears thickened.
