Hypertrophied column of Bertin

Case contributed by Dr Bruno Di Muzio

CT study for elucidation of nodular US image on left kidney.

Patient Data

Age: 53

Ct Abdomen and pelvis (selected images)

Both kidney have hypertrophied column of Bertin, and then enhance just like normal parenchyma in all phases. There is no mass effect.

Case Discussion

A column of Bertin is the extension of renal cortical tissue which separates the pyramids, and as such are normal structures. They become of radiographic importance when they are unusually enlarged an may be mistaken for a renal mass (renal pseudotumor).
