Hypoglycemic encephalopathy

Case contributed by Professor Ali Hekmatnia

Seizures from birth. Maternal history of diabetes mellitus type 2.

Patient Data

Age: 15 years
Gender: Male

Prominence of white matter and sulci with ex vacuo ventriculomegaly and white matter loss and gliosis involving bothe parietooccipital lobes. There is also a small, clinically insignificant, pineal cyst.

Case Discussion

The risk of developing hypoglycemia among infants born to diabetic mothers is 8-30% of neonates born to mothers with diabetes mellitus. The predisposing risk factors for neonatal hypoglycemia in diabetic pregnancies are related to poor maternal glycemic control and neonatal weight at birth and the inability to maintain glucose homeostasis.
