Iatrogenic hematoma post central line

Case contributed by Dr Matthew Jarvis

Presentation

Post failed insertion of left internal jugular central venous catheter. Chest x-ray to exclude complication.

Patient Data

Age: 21
Gender: Male

There is a left apical, pleural-based opacity which measures 8 x 6.5cm which is consistent with an apical hematoma given the clinical background.

Diffuse, bilateral pulmonary infiltrates are present.

Right internal jugular CVC, endotracheal tube and nasogastric tube are all visualized and in appropriate position. Right intercostal catheter is present with small residual pneumothorax.
