Iatrogenic oesophgeal intramural hematoma

Case contributed by Dr Muneesh Sharma

Recent difficult intubation (anaethetist used bougie). Developed signficant CO2 retention which dramatically improved with neck extension.

Patient Data

Age: 55

Newly developed mediastinal mass (not present on CT 3 months earlier), which is seen as a elongated well circumscribed non enhancing space occupying lesion a density of 50 HU, displacing the NG tube anteriorly to the left and compressing the trachea and carina.

Imaging appearance consistent with an esophageal intramural hematoma.

Case Discussion

Endoscopically confirmed as above. Recent 10 days interval scan showed mild reduction in size of the said hematoma.
