Iatrogenic renal arteriovenous fistula

Case contributed by Bálint Botz
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

CKD, proteinuria, US-guided renal biopsy performed 3 days earlier. Follow-up.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

An about 8 mm area of turbulent flow is visible in the lower third of the biopsied left kidney, demonstrated by both color and spectral Doppler. The kidney shows increased echogenicity and some smaller simple cysts. No perirenal or pelvic free fluid.

Case Discussion

Follow-up US of after kidney core biopsy is important, as iatrogenic AV shunts are not uncommon. Most resolve spontaneously, whilst in rare cases endovascular closure becomes necessary.
