MRI shows bilateral enlargement of CSF space around the optic nerves (T2) and mild enhancement of the optic nerves, compatible with pseudotumor cerebri (idiopathic intracranial hypertension).
Other findings which may be seen (although not in this case), include:
- papilledema (flattening of the sclera and optic nerve protrusion),
- empty sella turcica
In an atypical case, venous thrombosis must be excluded.

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), also historically known as pseudotumor cerebri, is a syndrome with signs and symptoms of increased intracranial pressure but where a causative mass or hydrocephalus is not identified.
