Presentation

Bilateral papilledema

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female

The MRI sequences show:

  • vertical tortuosity of the optic nerves
  • enlarged subarachnoid space around the optic nerves
  • flattening of the posterior sclera bilaterally
  • intraocular protrusion of the optic nerve heads
  • partially empty sella turcica
  • enlargement of the Meckel cava
  • mild enhancement of the prelaminar (intra-ocular) optic nerves well-visualized on postcontrast axial T1 fat saturation sequence
  • bilateral smooth stenosis of the mid-portion of the transverse sinuses on postcontrast sequences (MRV was not performed).

Note peripheral mucosal thickening of the maxillary antrum and sphenoid sinuses with partial filling of the ethmoid cells (chronic sinusitis).
