Idiopathic transient osteoporosis of the hip

Presentation

Left hip pain

Patient Data

Age: 21 years
Gender: Male
Modality: MRI

MRI demonstrates abnormal bone marrow SI of the left femoral head, neck as well as intertrochanteric region with low SI on T1WI and high SI on T2WI and STIR images.

Mild amount of left joint effusion.

X-ray of the left hip shows reduction of the bone density (osteoporosis) of the left femoral head if compared to the right side

Case Discussion

Young adult male with left hip pain. MRI demonstrates abnormal bone marrow signal of the femoral head, neck and intertrochanteric region together with joint effusion. Findings are consistent with Idiopathic transient osteoporosis of the hip
