Ileocaecal intussusception due to adenocarcinoma

Case contributed by Dr Vikas Shah

Presentation

Three days of abdominal pain and distension. On examination, vague fullness in right lower quadrant.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female
CT

CT abdomen and pelvis

There is an ileocolic intussusception. Incidental finding of a hiatus hernia.

Case Discussion

An intussusception in an adult should raise suspicion of a neoplastic lesion at the lead point. This was confirmed to be a Dukes C1 T3 N1 adenocarcinoma of the caecum which had intussuscepted into the ascending colon, bringing some ileum with it.
