Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

Transverse pelvic scan (superior to inferior) and Longitudinal (right to left):

  • Bilobed pelvic mass with 'tip of iceberg' appearance suggesting ovarian dermoid. Pelvic fluid.
  • Bilateral paracolic collections with stranding suggesting infected fluid.

Surgical specimen shows bilobed lesion which contained pus.

When opened, the contents confirmed a dermoid with hair, fat, etc.

Case Discussion

The typical ultrasound appearance of a dermoid (mature cystic ovarian teratoma) in the pelvis of a female with added information (history and paracolic collections) suggesting that it has been complicated by infection.
