Infected dermoid

Case contributed by Dr Rodney Strahan

Fever and pelvic pain

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female

Bilobed pelvic mass with 'tip of iceberg' appearance suggesting ovarian dermoid. Pelvic fluid.

Bilateral paracolic collections with stranding suggesting infected fluid.

Surgical specimen shows bilobed lesion which contained pus.

When opened, the contents confirmed a dermoid with hair, fat etc.

Case Discussion

The typical ultrasound appearance of a dermoid (mature cystic ovarian teratoma) in the pelvis of a female with added information (history and paracolic collections) suggesting that it has been complicated by infection.
