Infected penile implant pump reservoir

Case contributed by Dr Joe Mullineux

Lower abdominal pain at site of penile prothesis reservoir and low grade fever

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male

Post revision of penile implant with bilateral prostheses: the reservoir appears deflated with local rim thickening and local fluid with inflammatory stranding extending inferiorly along the tubing connecting the reservoir to the prosthesis in the penis suggesting an infected reservoir.

Four years earlier

Initial CT taken 4 years earlier when the patient has a single right-sided prosthesis - note the normal reservoir with normal shape and no local inflammatory stranding. This is useful as reference how a reservoir should look.

Case Discussion

Infective complications related to penile implant reservoirs are thankfully rare (3.3% in one quoted study) 1, therefore, an important review area in this group of patients. Treatment may include replacement or movement of the pump reservoir.
