Infectious myositis

Presentation

Recent injection to the left thigh. Complaining of local pain.

Patient Data

Age: 5 years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

At the site of pain pointed by the patient, there is an abnormal muscle echopattern involving vastus intermedius. Approximate Size - 50 x 20 x 12 mm.

There is the presence of edematous (hypoechoic) fibro-adipose septa associated with an anechoic collection of about 10 x 8 mm. Local hypervascularity is present in the affected muscle.

There is no erosion or irregularity of the underlying femoral cortex.  Overlying subcutaneous fat shows normal echopattern.    

There is no knee or hip joint effusion.

Case Discussion

Findings favor post-injection myositis involving vastus intermedius.
