Infectious non-union of left tibia

Case contributed by Dr Jack Ren

Post Intramedullary nailing, X-ray done to look for osseous union.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male

Initial X-ray

Tibial intramedillary nailing noted. Midshaft tibial fracture remains visible and undisplaced. There is extensive callus at the margins.

X-ray 4 month later

Comparison is made with the previous x-rays.

The left tibial intramedullary nail and screws and soft tissue surgical clips are again noted and appear unchanged in alignment. There is increased callus formation at the midshaft tibial fracture in comparison with the previous x-ray, however the fracture remains ununited, with no increase in bony bridging of the fracture site.
