Infiltrating ductal breast carcinoma on ultrasound

Case contributed by Dr Garth Kruger

Ultrasound images of a lesion called a fibroadenoma.

Patient Data

Age: 50
Gender: Female

Lesion that is taller than it is wide. It has angulated lobulated margins that is poorly defined with no pseudocapsule.

Case Discussion

This lesion was worked up and called a fibroadenoma. On biopsy it was an infiltrating ductal carcinoma. Notice how much taller it is than wide on the orthogonal image (right)? The angulated lobulated margins of this lesion justify needle biopsy every time. Poorly defined with no pseudocapsule. Its not a fibroadenoma, not now not ever.
