Infiltrating ductal carcinoma

Case contributed by Dr Garth Kruger

Routine screening.

Patient Data

Age: 58
Gender: Female
Modality: Mammography

No focal abnormality, mass lesion or architectural distortion. Note the profile of the pectoral muscle.

Two years later

Modality: Mammography

There is a subtle density in the submammary fat overlying the muscle profile.

Modality: Ultrasound

The ultrasound images show the typical appearance of an infiltrating ductal carcinoma deep to the breast on the pectoral fascia.

Case Discussion

The submammary fat is a review area in mammography. Train your eye to routinely review the profile of the pectoral muscle and you will not miss these lesions.
