Inflatable intragastric balloon device causing air-fluid level

55-year-old female with a history of dyspepsia status post bariatric gastric balloon placement in Mexico.
Patient Data
Radiograph of the abdomen demonstrates a large air-fluid level in the left upper quadrant.
Case Discussion
Given the patient's clinical history, the large air fluid level is most likely secondary to the patient's inflatable bariatric intragastric balloon device.
Of note, there is a new device that is currently unavailable in the United States, but is offered in Mexico. This device is swallowed by the patient, and once placement has been confirmed via radiograph, it is inflated. Three of these balloons can be placed and they can be left in the stomach for up to twelve weeks. They are removed via endoscopy.
