Ingested button battery

Presentation

The previously healthy patient presented with generalized abdominal pain after swallowing a button battery roughly 24 hours prior to presentation.

Patient Data

Age: 2 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

A rounded metallic density measuring 22 x 6 mm in size with beveled edges (fig # 1 and 2) and a halo sign (fig # 3) is seen in the region of the gastric pylorus and is concerning for impaction given over 24 hours of ingestion at presentation. No additional discrete radiopaque foreign body is evident. No discrete mass or organomegaly. Bowel gas is noted throughout the abdomen and pelvis. No evidence of bowel obstruction or free air. Visualized lung bases are clear. No acute osseous abnormalities. 

Case Discussion

The button battery was subsequently removed successfully by a pediatric gastroenterologist via EGD.
