Inhaled foreign body

Presentation

Parents witnessed a choking episode while eating corn. Expiratory wheeze on examination.

Patient Data

Age: 21 months
Gender: Female

Chest x-ray

x-ray

Asymmetric density of the hemithoraces, with the right lung hyperlucent compared to the left. The mediastinum is slightly shifted to the left. No radioopaque foreign body. No focal consolidation. In this context the appearance is concerning for foreign body aspiration.

Case Discussion

The patient underwent urgent bronchoscopy. A corn kernel was lodged in the right main bronchus, and was removed via suction. No further no airway abnormality or foreign body.
