Intense increased FDG uptake in the skeletal muscles probably due to exercise

Case contributed by Jayanth Keshavamurthy
Diagnosis not applicable

Presentation

PET-CT performed for evaluation of enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

There is diffusely increased metabolic activity in the skeletal muscles of the chest, arms, abdomen, and proximal thighs. It is most likely that the patient was doing heavy exercise the night before the PET-CT. It does not fit with brown fat uptake in these locations.

Case Discussion

Patients should be told to avoid strenuous and intense exercise for the 24-48 hours prior to a PET-CT/PET-MRI.
