Intestinal intussusception

Presentation

Previously healthy child, complaining from acute abdominal pain and vomiting for last one day.

Patient Data

Age: 1 year
Gender: Male
X-ray

A round soft tissue mass in the right iliac fossa giving target sign appearance surrounded by crescentic layer of gas making meniscus sign.

 

Case Discussion

The target sign consists of a soft-tissue mass that contains concentric circular or nearly circular areas of lucency, which are due to the mesenteric fat of the intussusceptum (1).

The meniscus sign consists of a crescent of gas within the colonic lumen that outlines the apex of the intussusception (1)

Abdominal ultrasonography confirmed intestinal intussusception.
