Intestinal volvulus

Diagnosis probable

Presentation

Acute pain in the paraumbilical region. No history of trauma. No inflammatory changes in blood check. No vomiting or fever. Normal stool few hours prior to the pain.

Age: Teenager
Gender: Female

Abdominal ultrasound showed whirlpool sign with normal blood flow in mesenteric vessels, slightly thickened intestinal wall without peristalsis and slightly enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes.

Power doppler 3D study

The image obtained by the 3D study clearly shows that the blood flow within mesenteric vessels is intact.

Case Discussion

The teenager girl showed up to an emergency department with the acute pain in paraumbilical region. All laboratory tests were negative. No vomits and fewer. Normal stools before.

Physical examination revealed painful abdomen centrally for palpation.

Abdominal ultrasound showed whirlpool sign with normal blood flow in mesenteric vessels, slightly thickened intestinal wall without peristalsis and slightly enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes.

The girl was observed in the hospital for few days. As the condition resolved spontaneously and no signs of ileus were found, the patient was discharged home.
