Intra-articular ganglion cyst - knee

Case contributed by Roberto Schubert
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Chronic knee pain while jogging and running.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Male

2 cm cyst in the posterior intercondylar notch, mainly surrounding the PCL and Humphrey's ligament.

Case Discussion

Ganglion cysts of the knee are rarely found in an exclusively intraarticular location. Cysts in the intercondylar notch are thought to arise from the synovial lining of Hoffa's fat pad or the cruciate ligaments. In this case, there seems to be no association with mucoid degeneration of the cruciate ligaments.
