Intramuscular arm abscess

Presentation

Left arm pain, swelling for 5-6 days. On examination - anterior arm swelling, redness.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Male

There are two elongated collection with mobile echoes involving biceps muscle belly.

One collection is just deep to muscle fascia. It reaches up to elbow level. Approximate length 14 cm, width  2.5 cm

There other collection is within muscle bulk.  It is relatively smaller in length. Approximate length 10 cm. Approximate width 2 cm.

There is synovitis in biceps long head tendon sheath and in gleno-humeral joint.

There are reactive nodes in axilla. There is no elbow effusion. Axillary/brachial vessels are patent.

Case Discussion

Surgery (incision and drainage) was performed. There were two separate pus collections. One within muscle belly and other other superficial to it; but not in subcutaneous plane. Gleno-humeral joint was not explored.
