Case contributed by Jonathan Robert Wylie
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Sudden onset neurological symptoms in a poorly controlled type 1 diabetic. Prior history of left retinal detachment and stroke.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female
ct

Hyperdense left vitreous corresponds to intra-ocular injection of silicone oil used as a means of tamponading the left retina, thus preventing re-detachment.

Established left cerebellar hemisphere and left thalamic infarcts.

Case Discussion

The hyperdense appearance of intra-ocular silicone oil could be misinterpreted as acute, intra-ocular hemorrhage by the unwary clinician unless the appropriate history is obtained.
