Intussusception

Presentation

Infant was suffering from agonizing spasmodic abdominal pain.

Patient Data

Age: 10 months
Gender: Male
X-ray

Right iliac fossa free of gas.

Ultrasound

An intra-abdominal soft tissue mass giving of target sign appearance is located dominantly within the umbilical region giving the possibility of intussusception.

Fluoroscopy

Hydrostatic reduction of intussusception.It shows steady flow of contrast from the descending until reaching the upper part of ascending colon. Evidence of coiled spring appearance, filling defect of intussusception seen during the procedure.No more progression.

 

Case Discussion

After US diagnosis of infantile intussusception with DRE showed red currant jelly mucus,hydrostatic reduction using dilated gastrografin was tried. Progressive monitored reduction achieved till the upper aspect of the ascending colon. No more progressive reduction, so decision for surgical intervention.
