Irradiated pharynx

Case contributed by Dr Charlie Chia-Tsong Hsu

Presentation

55 year old male right tonsil SCC. Recent completion of radiation therapy. Dysphagia.

Patient Data

Age: 55
Gender: Male

Smooth enlargement of the soft palate, epiglottis and aryepiglottic folds can be appreciated on the preliminary spot radiography.

Bulbous uvula cause incomplete closure and resulted in nasopharyngeal reflux. Similarily, reduced hyoid elevation and diminished epiglottis tilt resulted in laryngeal penetration. The observed acute radiation changes usually last for 2-6 weeks after cessation of therapy.
